Career

Laphonza Butler began her career as a union organizer for nurses in Baltimore and Milwaukee, janitors in Philadelphia, and hospital workers in New Haven, Connecticut. In 2009, she moved to California and organized home care and nursing for SEIU United Long Term Care Workers, becoming the president of SEIU Local 2015. Butler was elected president of the California SEIU State Council in 2013. She advocated for increasing California’s minimum wage and higher income taxes for the wealthiest Californians. As the president of SEIU Local 2015, she supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries. Butler was one of California’s electors who voted for Clinton in the 2016 election.

In 2018, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Butler as a trustee of the University of California for a 12-year term. She resigned from this position in 2021. In 2018, Butler joined SCRB Strategies, a California-based political consulting firm, as a partner. While at SCRB, she played a central role in Kamala Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign.
